About the Laser Marking | MIYACHI CORPORATION

Q
What is marking?
A
Marking is to laser mark something with letter, symbol, etc. The laser marker is widely utilized to put marks such as brand name, best-before-date, manufacturing number to show merchandise information and to control products.
Q
What are the major marking methods like?
A
Major marking methods are as follows:

- Laser marking
Projects laser beam on an object to change and color it. The contents of marking are easily changed, and micro-marking is possible.
Sort of markings are as follows:
Marking that shaves surface of an object; marking that oxidizes surface of material to cause light and shade; marking that removes only metal plating, painted layer; and so on.

- Inkjet printing
Shoots a jet of micro-particles of ink to mark with dots. An inkjet printer used with a personal computer, and a printer for industrial-use to mark best-before-date on laminated film are the major applications. Since ink is used, maintenance of nozzle is required.

- Ink stamping
Presses ink-supplied relief or intaglio onto an object to mark. This is the most popular method from the past. Though the equipment is less expensive, production routine cost is relatively high; additionally, taking care of ink is needed; further, surface to which ink is difficult to apply requires to be rinsed.

- Punching
Presses a numbering head, on which desired marks such as letter, character are engraved, onto an object. This is widely accepted for marking on metal. While the mark is very reliable and ever-lasting, this method is less productive and needs much time to change the head.
Q
What is the advantage of laser marker like?
A
It is as follows:

- Environmentally benign and easily recycled.
Unlike the marking with ink, no solvent is required. Since no ink sticks to base material, it is recycled easily. Also manufacturing process is reduced remarkably.

- Marking not erasable
Since the laser beam changes material, the mark is never erased, unlike an ink-using method. This marking complies with quality control requirements in PL Laws and ISO International Standard.

- Micro-marking
Micro-marking, not obtained by an inkjet printing, is easily done; therefore, it is the best suitable choice for microelectronic parts.

- Easy inputting and easy switching of figure and letter
The Inputting and switching are simplified because marks to be laser etched are computer controlled; therefore, laser marker is suitable for a high-volumes production of diversified products.

- Productivity-improving and labor-saving
The high-speed marking improves productivity. The relatively easy maintenance saves labor. Production line is easily automated and operates unmanned in the nighttime.

- Various materials are laser-markable.
Various materials such as metal, resin, ceramics, semiconductors, paper, glass are acceptable; in addition, laser marking also accepts material with oil film in which inkjet printing has difficulties.
Q
We would like to operate the laser marker.
A
You can operate it at our application laboratory in our Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka Sales Offices. Also, we can visit you and hold a demonstration at your site.
